JB Charleston Airmen support NASA launch program

Senior Airman Lashawn Gayle, 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintenance special operations specialist, performs the final checks while preparing a Joint Base Charleston C-17 Globemaster III for launch July 31st, 2020 at the JB Charleston flightline, S.C. C-17s from JB Charleston are a part of the NASA human space flight program. As a precautionary measure, U.S. Space Command and the U.S. Air Force assigned teams of search and rescue professionals to stand alert ahead of the launch at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina; Patrick Air Force Base, Florida; and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The teams are comprised of Pararescuemen, Combat Rescue Officers, and Aircrew Flight Equipment specialists.

The Munitions Flight helps keep JB Charleston safe

The flares are used on aircraft in order to attempt to divert attention when the aircraft is believed to be in danger. This is just one task the munitions flight has to perform, other tasks include flightline support, base support, and NASA and SpaceX support.
