Spouse of Local Coast Guardsman receives Red Cross’ highest award

Misty Gilbert, a spouse of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston Boatswain’s mate who works as a nanny, is awarded the Certificate of Merit July 7, 2020, during a virtual recognition ceremony in Summerville, S.C. According to the Red Cross, the Certificate of Merit is the highest award given by the Red Cross to individuals who save or sustain a life using skills learned in a Red Cross Training Services course.

American Red Cross blood drive takes place at Joint Base Charleston

U.S. Air Force Col. Marc Greene, 628th Air Base Wing commander, gives blood during a blood drive at the Joint Base Charleston Fitness Center, S.C., Aug. 12, 2020. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.  And that need has grown exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The blood donated is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries. COVID-19 antibody testing was also conducted during the drive. The next JB Charleston Blood Drive is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2020.
