Det 5: Training Airmen from simulation to mobilization

Detachment 5 utilizes a 44,000 square foot maintenance training facility to safely and effectively train Mobility Airmen throughout the Air Force on maintenance and repair procedures. The instructor team provides over 20,000 hours of instruction per year to new and seasoned avionic maintainers of the U.S. and partnered militaries who also utilize similar airframes. The Airmen are trained on innovative simulators in a safety oriented environment to maximize their effectiveness on the flightline. The C-17 Maintenance Trainer Development Team is comprised of training instructors from multiple Air Force Specialty Codes who fill the role as subject matter experts for the development of maintenance Airmen.

CATM zeroes in on targets

Fabrication Flight Maintains Mission Readiness

A U.S. Air Force aircraft structural maintenance technician from the 437th Maintenance Squadron applies the outer coating of aircraft paint to a C-17 Globemaster III July 2, 2019 at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. The technicians at JB Charleston maintain C-17s in support of maintaining a global reach airlift capability. Structural maintenance technicians advise on and maintain the structural and low observable repair, modification and corrosion protection treatment of various types of aircraft.

NAVCON Brig Charleston receives new commanding officer

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Carl Brobst, outgoing commanding officer of Naval Consolidated (NAVCON) Brig Charleston, right, relinquishes command to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jack Garcia, incoming commanding officer of NAVCON Brig Charleston, left, during a change of command ceremony June 28, 2019, Joint Base Charleston Naval Weapons Station, S.C. During the ceremony, Garcia relieved Brobst as commanding officer of NAVCON Brig Charleston. Garcia was previously the executive officer for NAVCON Brig Charleston. Brobst will be transferring to the Center for Surface Combat Systems Detachment, Mayport, Fla. NAVCON Brig Charleston’s mission is to ensure the security, good order and discipline, safety of adjudged and pretrial prisoners, and detain enemy combatants in accordance with guidance from the president through the secretary of defense. NAVCON Brig Charleston also aims to retrain and restore the maximum number of prisoners to honorable service and prepare members to be productive citizens outside of the military.
