EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. Since the Atlantic Hurricane Season officially opens June 1, Team Eglin members should gear up now for what is expected to be an above average hurricane season, according to a recent advisory issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center. Master Sgt. Pete Scheidt, a loadmaster with the 14th Airlift Squadron, gets an earful as Master Sgt. (Ret.) Ed Flanders recounts stories from his military service and captivity during World War II at the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action luncheon on Joint Base Charleston, S.C., Sept. 17, 2010. Mr. Flanders served 22 years in the U.S. Army as a combat medic. His military career spanned both World War II and the Korean War. Three days before Christmas, Mr. Flanders was captured in Belgium and held as a prisoner by Nazis until he was liberated five months later by Russian soldiers. Mr. Flanders lost 30 pounds during his first month in captivity. "They didn't have to feed us, but when they did, they gave us soup. It was 90 percent water. Senior Airman Samuel Siewert, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ernest Jenkins and Capt. The retreat commenced after the end of a 24-hour, joint-service run, which kept military service flags and the POW/MIA flag in constant motion. Colonel Jenkins, a former POW, was detained in Bath, Germany, during World War II after his B-17 was shot down. He was imprisoned for 17 months. Training to fly, training for the Ironman

U.S. Air Force Capt. Jamie Turner performs quarterly continuation training on a C-17 flight simulator while at Joint Base Charleston, S.C., Sept. 7, 2010. While in the simulator she will practice emergency training, routine flying and instrument procedures. Captain Turner was selected to attend the Ironman World Championship at Kona, Hawaii. Capt. Turner was selected as one of 1,800 Iroman World Championship competitors. She will test her physical and mental endurance against one of the biggest challenges the sports world has to offer.
