Expanding the Mission
January 31, 2020 — Nearly 50 years ago, astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins made the journey back from the moon onboard Apollo 11. The men passed into Earth’s atmosphere and made a splash landing in the Pacific Ocean. This was the end of the astronauts’ journey, but it was only the beginning for rescue and recovery teams. Detachment 3, of the 45th Operations Group, is responsible for coordinating astronaut rescue and recovery support for our nation’s human space flight programs. Humanitarian mission: Enduring Promise
February 19, 2019 — Joint Base Charleston participated in a humanitarian aid mission planned at the request of the U.S. Secretary of State, in close coordination with USAID and with the approval of the government of Colombia. The role of the U.S. military during this peaceful mission is to transport urgently needed aid to Colombia for eventual distribution by relief organizations on the ground for Venezuelans impacted by the rapidly deteriorating crisis in their country. JB Charleston executes full-spectrum readiness exercise
November 19, 2018 — The 628th Air Base Wing, 437th Airlift Wing and 315th Airlift Wing teamed up for a total force rapid mobility exercise Nov. 12-17, 2018. The exercise focused on total force readiness, mobilization, base defense and quick-response airlift capabilities, according to Col. November 1, 2018 — Mobility Airmen from Joint Base Charleston gathered at the 2018 Air Mobility Command and Airlift/Tanker Association Symposium at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas, Oct. 25-28. The annual convention brings together leadership, industry experts, civic leaders and Airmen from around the globe to discuss opportunities and challenges facing the country as well as AMC. Air Mobility Command welcomes new commander
September 19, 2018 — Air Mobility Command welcomed a new commander at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Sept. 7. Air Force Gen. Maryanne Miller took command of AMC from Air Force Gen. Carlton D. Everhart II, who retires after more than 35 years of service. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein, officiated the change of command ceremony. Miller is the thirteenth commander to take the reins since the major command was designated as Air Mobility Command, June 1, 1992.
