70th Anniversary of the AF: Honoring our Heroes

Editors Note: This album is one of several products being shared in 2017 by the Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs Office in honor of the 70th Anniversary of the Air Force and those who selflessly have and continue to serve our nation.

Capt. Kevin Summerbell, 15th Airlift Squadron, 437th Airlift Wing, stands in front of the entrance to a C-17 Globemaster III on the flightline at Joint Base Charleston April 4, 2017. Summerbell was enlisted in the Army as an infantryman prior to commissioning in the Air Force. He deployed to Iraq twice during his time in the Army and received a Purple Heart for his wounds and courage on the battlefield. Summerbell earned his bachelor’s degree, attended ROTC and completed flight school, then became a C-17 pilot at the 437th AW.

18th AF leadership visits 437th AW

Aircrew training device saves AMC time, money

By using the device, Airmen receive their five-year required physiology training in a realistic simulation, locally and without the risks associated with the hypobaric chamber.

JB Charleston participates in Wingman Day Olympics

For Wingman Day Airmen participated in various events with their squadrons to foster teamwork and communication while covering the four domains of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness.

ALZ repairs complete

The runway, originally constructed of asphalt, was beginning to deteriorate. Approximately 21,000 tons of asphalt was repurposed as a foundation below the new concrete.

MACA highlights Charleston airspace safety

The MACA program is designed to promote aviation safety between military and civilian pilots who share the local airspace. Sharing the mission of JB Charleston with community civilian pilots offers a better understanding of why specific procedures are put in place. The event gives pilots, military and civilian, a forum to discuss flying and aviation safety.

Welcome home

Staff Sgt. Theodore Clever III, of the 15th Airlift Squadron, 437th Airlift Wing, reunites with his children upon returning home from a deployment to southwest Asia Nov. 2, 2016, at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Members of the 14th and 16th Airlift Squadrons returned as well. The 437th AW commands the base's premier active-duty flying wing. The wing flies and maintains one of the largest fleets of C-17 aircraft in the Air Force, providing a significant portion of Air Mobility Command’s Global Reach airlift capability.
