Herschel Walker, legendary former NFL football player, got up close and personal with a local legend and larger than life personality, Charlie the Alligator on Aug. 6, 2014, at the Joint Base Charleston – Weapons Station, S.C. Walker visited the unofficial mascot of Team Charleston at his water-front housing area. The several hundred pound gator has been a fixture at the JB Charleston – Weapons Station since the early 1960s. Walker visited the base to share his story about growing up in Georgia, playing professional football and how he sought help from mental health professionals for his struggles with dissociative identity disorder. Walker spoke and met Sailors and Airmen at both the Weapons Station and Air Base where he met with service members and their families and signed autographs. Walker played college football at the University of Georgia and spent 14 years in the NFL. (U.S. Air Force photo / Senior Airman Tom Brading)
