Warrior of the Week: Capt. Matthew Tinker

17th Airlift Squadron

Capt. Matthew Tinker is a member of the 17th Airlift Squadron and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for more than two years.

He is currently deployed to the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron where he flies missions in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

At home station, Captain Tinker is the 437th Airlift Wing Plans and Programs deputy chief.

"My office is responsible for running the commander's installation control center during emergencies, exercises and contingencies," said Captain Tinker." "I have served as the ICC executive office during four mobility exercises including a major accident response exercise, hurricane training and also during the Charleston AFB operational readiness inspection."

This "warrior of the week" grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and was commissioned in the Air Force more than eight years ago. He said that he joined the Air Force because of his fascination with flying.

"I have been fascinated with flying for as long as I can remember," said Captain Tinker. "But there was also a more personal connection; my grandparents were veterans of World War II and the U.S. Army Air Corps. I love studying history and I think it's humbling to be a part of their legacy."

Captain Tinker said the best parts of his job are the people he works with and the flying mission

"The flying and the great people are the best part of the job," he said. "I'm never bored and there is always something new to learn."

Captain Tinker said his future career goals for right now are to focus on upgrading the C-17 and the rest will work itself out later.

"Captain Tinker is an invaluable asset to Team Charleston," said Lt. Col Kelly Kimsey, 437 AW Plans and Programs chief. "His positive attitude and professionalism are truly infectious and he is sorely missed here. "We're all very proud of the hard work he is doing on this deployment and look forward to his safe return home."
