The Public Affairs teams tells Joint Base Charleston story to the American public. Through targeted communication, we reach out to our internal audience on base, the local public and military and civic leaders. We have a toolbox full of traditional news reporting; feature stories and commentaries; video reports, print, and social media. The PA team utilizes each of these tools to strategically shape and strengthen the Air Force's, public.

Command Information

Command Information is an internal communication program used to inform service members, families, civilian employees, and retirees about policies, missions, and community programs. Joint Base Charleston PA seeks to inform, educate, and boost morale or our internal audience by providing open and clear messaging that combats disinformation

It is important to note that the PA team wishes to ensure marquee messages are safe, readable, and effective for a high-traffic driving environment while giving clear and measurable standards. If the message cannot be understood in one glance, it is not marquee-ready and will not be screen.

Members across Joint Base Charleston can check out self-help camera kits from the Public Affairs office for unit events that are not covered by the 628th Air Base Wing Public Affairs.

  • Requestor may not leave the local area with the equipment
  • Requestor may not have equipment signed out for more than one week.
  • Photos taken are the responsibility of the requestor, necessary equipment will be provided.
  • All damages are the responsibility of the requestor.

Community Engagement

Builds, strengthens, and maintains relationships between military installations and local communities to foster trust, understanding, and support for the Air Force mission. It involves coordinating base tours, speakers' bureaus, flyovers, parades, and managing community relations to support recruiting and public awareness. 

We are pleased to offer guided tours of Joint Base Charleston to our community partners. Please review the following guidelines to ensure a smooth request process.

Tour Requirements

  • Tour Season: Tours are conducted from February through July and September through October.
  • Group Size: Tours are for groups with a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 40 participants.
  • Submission Deadline: All requests must be submitted at least 30 days in advance of the desired tour date and subject to availability.

This program fosters collaboration between local civic leaders and installation commanders, offering a unique opportunity to experience the mission, operations, and people of Team Charleston firsthand. To request a speaker from Joint Base Charleston, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Submission: All requests must be received via email to 628.abw.pa@us.af.mil.
  2. Timeline: To ensure adequate time for review and coordination, please submit your request at least 45 days prior to the date you require a response.
  3. Required information: Please include the following details in your request email:  
  • Event Details:
    • Name, nature, and purpose of the event
    • Date, time, and location
    • Hosting or sponsoring organization
  • Speaker & Topic:
    • Specific speaker requested (if known) and/or the desired topic/expertise
    • Type of remarks requested (e.g., keynote, panelist, welcome address)
  • Audience Information:
    • A description of the expected audience (e.g., size, demographics)
    • A list of other confirmed speakers or distinguished guests
  • Logistics & Financials:
    • Available audio/visual equipment (e.g., projector, microphone, podium)
    • Confirmation if the event is free or ticketed. If ticketed, please state the cost and what the fees cover.
    • Please disclose any meal, gift, ticket, or other honoraria being offered to the speaker. Please note, military members are subject to strict ethics regulations.

Media Operations

Manages the flow of information between the Air Force and external news media, providing official, accurate, and timely information to local, national, and international outlets. It involves facilitating media interviews, handling queries, and arranging base access, while building public trust and supporting unit morale. 

About Joint Base Charleston - Joint Base Charleston is one of 12 Department of Defense Joint Bases and host to over 60 DOD and Federal agencies. The 628th Air Base Wing delivers installation support to a total force of over 90,000 Airmen, Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians, dependents and retirees across four installations including the Air Base and the Naval Weapons Station. The base maintains $7.5 billion in base property and capital assets spanning three seaports, two civilian-military airfields, 39 miles of rail and 22 miles of coastline totaling almost 24,000 acres. A few unique programs include operation of 3 locomotives critical to moving crucial munitions, MRAPS, and tanks, as well as participation in the Global Threat Reduction Initiative. Joint Base Charleston also offers unique installation support missions including the harbor security patrol, the transportation isolation system (TIS) and the Cooper River dredging. The mission consists of six different focus areas: installation support, airlift & airdrop operations, training naval nuclear operators, deployable logistics, multi-mission warfighter support and inter-agency cooperation.
