Joint Base Charleston to host MACA general aviation ‘Fly-in’

021116 | Nov. 4, 2016

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA —  Team Charleston and the 437th Airlift Wing’s Flight Safety division will host a Mid-Air Collision Avoidance general aviation ‘Fly-in’ this Saturday, November 5, 2016, on the Air Base from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The MACA ‘Fly-in’ is conducted to promote safe air operations and strengthen the relationship with civil aviation pilots who frequently transit in and around JB Charleston’s airspace. General aviation pilots from across South Carolina will be able to fly their own aircraft in and park on the military apron to attend the event.

“This is an excellent opportunity for general aviation pilots to learn about our mission, see the aircraft assigned to JB Charleston and also interact with the flight and maintenance crews of our C-17 Globemaster III aircraft,” said Maj. Brian Butler, 437th AW’s chief of flight safety. “Our primary goal is to educate them on how we train in the surrounding airspace and present the challenges we all face in keeping the skies safe in order to prevent a collision mishap in the future.”

The 437th AW’s flight safety office will provide pilots with presentations relevant to aviation safety as well as the opportunity to tour some of the base agencies in an effort to promote awareness and lower mid-air collision threats.

The 437th Airlift Wing is the largest airlift wing on the East coast. They operate the C-17 on local training flights as well as worldwide airlift missions.

Media interested in covering this event must RSVP by 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 to: 628.abw.pa@us.af.mil or (843) 963-5608. Media will need to arrive at the Dorchester Gate Visitor’s Center parking lot Nov. 5 no later than 8:30 a.m. and meet with the Joint Base Charleston Public Affairs representative.
