JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. —
Joint Base Charleston will resume normal operations tomorrow, Jan. 6, 2018, with some limited services and closures to some services facilities.
The runways at Joint Base Charleston have been closed since Wednesday when winter storm Grayson dumped up to 6-inches of snow on the airfield. The airfield currently remains closed due to icy runway conditions. Three plows were contracted earlier today clearing the majority of the snow off one of the runways and some taxiways, but some ice and moisture still remain. With temperatures dipping below freezing overnight, we anticipate the moisture refreezing causing slippery conditions. We are cautiously optimistic, however, the remaining ice will melt on Saturday from the sun’s convection heating, which could allow opening a single runway tomorrow afternoon. Base operations personnel are regularly monitoring runway and taxiway pavement conditions and are committed to resuming flight operations as soon as it is safe to do so.
The Air Base Exchange will open at 11 a.m. The Air Base Express will open at 10 a.m. Navy Exchange facilities will open at 9 a.m. Both Commissaries will open at 11 a.m.
The Weapons Station Galley will be open for normal weekend hours Saturday and Sunday with a limited menu. The Air Base Bowling Alley and Snack Bar will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6. and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7. The Air Base Flight Kitchen will be open when the airfield reopens. The Dive and Marrington Bowling Center will reopen on Sunday, Jan. 7.
All Fitness Centers will open for normal weekend hours beginning Saturday. The Air Base Fitness Center will continue to be open for 24-hours unmanned access today. The Eastside Gym will not be open for 24-hours unmanned access until next week.
The Redbank Plantation Golf Course Snack Bar and Wrenwoods Golf Course Snack Bar will reopen on Monday, Jan. 8. The golf courses themselves will reopen when weather allows based on snowmelt. The Outdoor Adventure Center will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Air Base Club will be closed until further notice due to water damage.
