JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - Col. Clinton C. Wasem, 1608th Air Transport Wing Commander, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., greets Hungarian refugees on Dec. 10, 1956, as they arrive in Charleston on a C-121 Constellation. The refugees were being transported from Germany to New Jersey by several locally-based C-121s as part of Operation Safe Haven when weather forced them to take refuge at Charleston AFB over Christmas. Base members made the refugess feel at home, offering shelter, care, clothes, meals and a holiday gala.
