JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. - A Hungarian refugee, one of 279 who were flown out of Eastern Europe in December of 1956 by C-121s based at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., receives a meal at the Charleston AFB dining hall. The refugees were being tranported from Germany to New Jersey on Dec. 10, 1956, as part of Operation Safe Haven, when bad weather forced them to take refuge at Charleston AFB over Christmas. Base members made the refugess feel at home, offering shelter, care, clothes, meals and a holiday gala.
