U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Lester Crim sits among other ALYX doners waiting for Red Cross technicians to prepare them before donation at the Red Cross mobile blood drive at the Sports and Fitness Center June 23, 2010, at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. The ALYX donation uses the ALYX Component Collection System to collect two pints of red blood cells in one sitting. The ALYX system uses a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma and platelets. After seperating blood cells, the machine returns plasma and platelets with some added saline solution. Sergeant Crim is a jet engine mechanic with the 315th Maintenance Squadron.
