U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Lester Crim squeezes a stress pad to build up pressure, allowing for easier collection through the ALYX Component Collection System at the Sports and Fitness Center June 23, 2010, at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. The Red Cross is targeting donors with O-type blood for the new device because the blood is universal and the most used blood at hospitals. Also being targeted is A negative and B negative blood. The ALYX donation takes 10 to 15 minutes longer than a conventional donation, but is otherwise no different to the donor. After the ALYX donation, the donor is advised not to donate again for 112 days due to the long period the red blood cells take to regenerate.
