Senior Airmen Mark Miller and Airman 1st Class Chaz Wise, 628th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels technicians, use a hydrometer to perform an API Gravity test on Jet fuel May 9, 2013, at Joint Base Charleston – Air Base, S.C. The hydrometer floats when the fuel is at 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Since fuel expands and contracts when exposed to hot and cold temperatures, the API Gravity test can provide Airmen with the accurate number of gallons in a fuel tank depending on the outside temperature.
