Commander's Comments 2-2-07

By Col. Glen Joerger 437th Airlift Wing commander

What a phenomenal week for the men and women of Team Charleston. What an honor it was to have Gen. Duncan McNabb, Air Mobility Command commander, and his wife, Linda, spend the day with us to see firsthand how the work we do saves lives everyday.

The energy and passion for what we do can't be faked and it was definitely noticed. We were the last visit for the general and it was the best. People who work on this base or support us in the local community are award-winning, special people. That includes our active-duty Airmen, reservists, Navy joint partners, civilians, family members, volunteers and civic leaders. We're leaders in the command and the cream of the crop when it comes to working as a team with our joint partners.

Thanks to all those folks who worked so hard to get us ready for General McNabb's visit. A special thanks goes to Lt. Col. Paul Eberhart, 16th Airlift Squadron commander, for doing a superb job organizing the visit. Flexibility is key to what we do and thanks for being able to adjust when you had to. I'd also like to thank Maj. Bill Foster, 437th Mission Support Squadron commander, who was the point man for Linda's portion of the visit. We recruit Airmen but we retain families. That's what it was so important for Mrs. McNabb to see the outstanding family support we give to our loved ones here. Thanks to all the other people from across the base who worked to make this visit a great success. Our commander was extremely impressed and proud of each and every member of this team.

Speaking of a proud team, we'll be recognizing four chief master sergeants Saturday night during our Chief's Recognition Ceremony. Two active-duty chiefs and two reserve chiefs will be formally welcomed into the Charleston Chiefs Group. This year marks 20 years that the Charleston group has been together and continuously looking for ways to help our awesome enlisted corps. Your responsibilities as a chief master sergeant are immense but the reward for taking care of our Airmen is even greater. Congratulations.
I'd also like to congratulate the 11 members of the 437th Airlift Wing who were named best-of-the-best at the annual award ceremony recently. It's oftentimes very difficult to stand out with the caliber of people we have assigned here. Yet, you did. Great job and good luck at the next level of competition.

Finally, I'd like to remind everyone that every Airman is an ambassador for all of us. Whether you're participating in a parade, eating lunch right off base or speaking to the media, you are an Air Force spokesperson. Always think of ways to share stories about the tremendous things we do here and downrange with people in our community.
There's a reason why the Charleston civilian community is always honored for their support to us. It's because they understand what we do, they're proud to have us here and we give back to them as much as they give to us. Please continue to make me proud. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Team Charleston -- One family, one mission, one fight!
