Command Chief's Corner

By Chief Master Sgt. Melvin Willis 437th Airlift Wing command chief master sergeant

Good morning Team Charleston! Let me begin this week by extending a very warm and heartfelt greeting to all of the distinguished visitors who are spending some time with us this week. As I have said many times before, we are always excited about the opportunity to showcase some of the best warriors in Air Mobility Command.

Congratulations are in order to the thirteen members of the wing who were notified earlier this week of their promotion selection to senior master sergeant. What a tremendous accomplishment when you consider this promotion will place you in the top three percent of our professional enlisted force. I am sure you are all still beaming with pride and rightly so as this is truly a phenomenal achievement. The numerous hours spent studying your supervisory examination study guide and the years of dedicated and honorable service have paid off for you and your families. This is definitely the type of news you should be shouting from the rooftops as you share it with friends and family both near and far.

For those who were not selected for promotion this cycle continue to lean forward and study even harder. While I understand you will be disappointed do not let it consume you. If your relative standing among peers has improved over last year then you are definitely moving in the right direction. Talk with your supervisors and mentors to see what you can do to make yourself more competitive. Before I forget, let me offer a word of thanks to Master Sgt. Marlon Ball, 437th Communications Squadron, for taking on the task of putting together the promotion release celebration held Wednesday. It was a wonderful gathering, fitting for the occasion. For those who were being honored during that event please pass along your thanks to him and all those who assisted in that endeavor.

Earlier this week I had the privilege of once again spending some quality time with one of the wing's outstanding young professionals, Airman 1st Class Jaron Haines, 437th Maintenance Squadron. What a phenomenal representative of our junior enlisted corps and more importantly our Air Force. At the end of the day I really felt like he had, in some respect, been cheated as I can safely say I gained more from the experience than he did. Thank you for sharing your day with me and thanks to your teammates for taking up the slack while you were out of the office. I must also thank a couple of our mission partners from the 373rd Training Squadron Detachment 5, Master Sgt. Raymond Girouard and Tech. Sgt. Michael Nagy for taking the time to walk Airman Haines and me through their facilities and show us the impact that he as a precision measurement equipment technician has on their training operation. Airman Haines' pride and passion for his job was evident as they explained how the precise calibration of equipment was so critical to them and how he and his fellow Airmen so positively impacted their mission each and every day.

Have a great weekend! Team Charleston - One family, One mission, One fight!
