Command Chief's Corner

By Command Chief Master Sgt. Melvin Willis 437th Airlift Wing command chief master sergeant

Let me begin this week by offering a very special thank you to all of the administrative professionals assigned to Team Charleston. Earlier this week we recognized them formally but I wanted to make sure I gave my own little "shout out" to them. I learned early on in my career that the people who knew everything about everything were the folks responsible for handling all the paperwork; that has not changed. What I also learned was that the task was never complete until all the paperwork was done, so those administrative professionals were paramount to ensuring mission success.
I have been blessed during my tenure as the command chief to have worked with some of the best professionals in our Air Force. They have kept me on track, on time and on task. I am sure many of you can say the same. So to my administrative professionals and all others assigned to Charleston Air Force Base, thank you!

You have seen it around the base and on the flightline. Our mobile food truck, now formally known as the "Globemaster Express," is out and about providing some much-needed sustenance to those who are not able to break away from the work section but need a little something to keep them going.

Many of you may be wondering where the name "Globemaster Express" came from, well, I am glad you asked. Earlier in the year, we assisted the Army Air Force Exchange Service in holding a contest to come up with both a name and logo for the mobile food truck. We received an unbelievable number of entries so the decision was difficult. The winning name was provided by Master Sgt. Jeffery Phipps, 437th Civil Engineer Squadron. The graphic now proudly displayed on the vehicle and was crafted by Clayton Seufert, 437th Mission Support Squadron. Thanks to everyone who submitted an idea; keep those creative juices flowing since you never know when you will have to put them to work again.

Congratulations to those members of Team Charleston who yesterday were recognized as the best of the best for the first quarter of 2007. Having reviewed all the submissions and presided as president of the enlisted boards, I know firsthand how difficult the task was to select the winners. Everyone nominated should be extremely proud of their accomplishments and proud of the fact that their supervisor and commander felt they should be considered for this recognition. Let me offer a very special thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony especially the family members and friends who were there to show their support. Having you there made it a truly memorable event.

Finally, ask yourself this question every morning: What am I going to do today to help me achieve my personal and professional goals? Hopefully you will have an answer and it should not be the same response as the day before. Have a plan for your future and make a conscious effort each and every day to do something to achieve that plan. Do not leave your future to chance, you may not like where it takes you.

Have a great weekend! Team Charleston - One family, one mission, one fight!
