Command Chief's Corner

By Command Chief Master Sgt. Bernise Belcer 437th Airlift Wing command chief master sergeant

I have always thought it wise to remember the many supervisors, first sergeants, commanders and mentors whose influence molded me into the leader I am today.

It is important to me to remember where I came from and those who helped me along the way. Such memories keep me well grounded and extremely grateful.

Recently, Colonel Millander and I participated in the 18th Air Force Commanders and Command Chiefs Conference, which included a dinner in honor of the 18 AF's impressive heritage. During dinner, while displaying a heraldic device, each commander proposed a toast and proudly summarized the history of their unit. They also shared the story behind the device which symbolized one aspect of their unit's historic contribution. As each toast was raised, we journeyed back in time to salute a small piece of our heritage. The experience evoked a strong sense of pride and patriotism.

That evening I learned many new things about the aircraft, air bases and aviators who helped to shape today's Air Force. The event made such an impression that I felt compelled to share my thoughts on our heritage and what I believe we do to add to it.

Just as I believe it is wise to remember those who helped to shape our careers, it is equally important to remember those who sacrificed to shape our Air Force. In remembering, I have gained a renewed sense of respect and appreciation for the heritage of this great command. When I think of the awesome airlift capability of today's aircraft and the knowledge, skill and ability of the Airmen who fly and support them, I have to thank those who came before us.

All of our advances in technology, tactics, processes, procedures and Airmen are a result of their hard work and ingenuity. Just think, where would our airlift wing be were it not for the efforts of the airlift units and planes that preceded it? They are where we came from and it is important that we never forget.

It is also important that we never forget that the work we do saves lives every day and will be recorded as moments in our history. The successes we have today add to the heritage of our distinguished command. Everything we do, every award we win and every mission we complete contributes to the heritage that will be passed on. The aircraft we fly, the way we employ them, as well as the way we support them, will all one day be pieces of our heritage. So, let it serve as a reason to continue doing your very best.

Now, if any of you ever get the chance to attend or help to plan a heritage event, I strongly encourage you to participate. If you allow it, the experience is sure to touch your heart and inspire courage and a greater devotion to service.
