CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
What an amazing week!
Team Charleston had the privilege of hosting the president of the United States Tuesday. It was an honor for us to welcome President Bush back to Charleston and have him interact closely with many of our Airmen.
After highlighting our C-17 maintenance and loading capabilities on the flightline, the president joined members of Team Charleston and the local community for lunch when he commented on the outstanding performance of our world-class team.
Several Airmen from a host of base organizations had the unforgettable opportunity to dine with the president, shake his hand and mingle with him over lunch at the Charleston Club.
As reiterated by the president, your inspiring commitment to fly, fight and win in this war does not go unnoticed. "Every day, C-17's lift off from Charleston carrying hundreds of tons of vital supplies to our troops on the frontlines. Your efforts are saving lives and bringing security to our country. Every member of Team Charleston can take pride in a great record of achievement - and America is grateful for your courage in the cause of freedom."
I also want to express my gratitude to everyone involved in the coordination of President Bush's visit. From protocol and public affairs to civil engineers, security forces, contracting, communications, maintenance, operations group, medical group ... everyone on base had a hand in making this a tremendous success. Thank you all for your patience, flexibility and extra hours worked during the week and weekend. Dedication and commitment to excellence was evident at every turn.
I had the rare opportunity to spend personal time with the president in his limousine traveling from the flightline. He was tremendously impressed and very grateful for our war efforts and the support of our families. Everything we do helps to save lives at home and overseas. Without a doubt, we have proven that no one does it better than Team Charleston!
Another notable event on the calendar was Air Mobility Rodeo 2007. The Charleston Rodeo team began preparing for these demanding events in May and have taken place this week at McChord AFB, for the competition. Rodeo tested the flight and ground skill sets of our Airmen across a wide range of activities from special tactics, security forces, aerial port operations, aeromedical evacuation, maintenance and flight operations.
This year's team was unique for being the first Charleston-blended active and reserve team. The 2007 Rodeo team is exactly that ...a TEAM! Members from the 437th and 315th Airlift Wings stood side-by-side among the 40 teams and more than 2,500 people as they competed together representing Team Charleston.
We sent off our Charleston Rodeo team in true Low Country style July 20.
After joining our team on Wednesday at McChord, the participation and spirited competition between AMC teams has only served to strengthen our bond and hone war-fighting skills that already exists amongst our Airmen. We will walk away from Rodeo with an array of innovative techniques and tactical skills that will only enhance air mobility operations. It was an honor to represent Charleston among our many allies and friends across the command.
I could not have asked for a more dynamic week of inspiring events. Let's remain strong and keep our focus on what matters most. Take some time to share your experiences this past week with your family members ...stay driven, continue to learn and remember the mission.
The bar is high and we have set an incredible precedent. People expect the best from Team Charleston, let's continue to lead the way and exceed expectations. Keep your heads high and remember ... Team Charleston - take the fight to the enemy!
