Imagery helps communicate messages

By Lt. Col. Catherine Walter 1st Combat Camera Squadron commander

The chief of staff of the Air Force recently released his vision for ensuring our future ability to fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace in a white paper distributed throughout the Air Force. It is accompanied by a Strategic Communications Campaign Plan, whose goal is to raise the prominence of the Air Force in strategic dialogue.

Have I lost you already? You should check out the Communications Took Kit which was released with the plan and has a lot of interesting information and is available on the Air Force Portal.

I hope to show you the power of images in achieving a strategic effect.

Strategic communications is used as a force multiplier to further enhance the effects of conducting this exercise in the region and military-to-military visits. The merger of the visual information and public affairs communities is part of the Air Force effort to harness the power of images for strategic communications. Quality imagery not only informs, it moves you, it makes you want to know more and it stays with you long after an event. If we are really lucky, the imagery becomes iconic of the positive image we are trying to portray.

So back to the CSAF's white paper ... let's take a look at how imagery taken by both combat camera and public affairs can help the CSAF communicate his message.
