Commander's Comments

By Col. John "Red" Millander 437th Airlift Wing commander

Above All
That's what we are as members of the United States Air Force. Above All, we dominate air, space and cyberspace and we do it better than anyone else. Above All, we are warriors who fight to defend freedom. Above All, we are Airmen.

Above All is more than the Air Force's new recruiting and public awareness advertising slogan, it's our way of life. Never before has showing the world who Airmen are and what we do been as important as it is today. Twenty-four-hours-a-day news stations and advanced telecommunications have made information sharing just as important to what we do as bombs and bullets.

Team Charleston is a vital part of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). More than a fourth of the base is deployed right now doing everything from hauling mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles to running security operations at a prison in Iraq. As a whole, the Air Force has more than 25,000 Airmen downrange. However, there are many people who think that the Army and Marine Corps are the only ones in this war.

That's where Above All comes in. Every Airman is a communicator. While we do our best to share the Air Force story through base tours, media events, and air shows, the best Air Force advertisement is you ... the Airman. I know you're proud of being a member of our service. You've seen the amazing progress we're making in the GWOT. Now, with this new campaign, you're being recharged with sharing your stories with the world.

Throughout the next few months, you'll be seeing new Air Force advertisements on TV and the web. It doesn't end there. According to Col. Michael Caldwell, deputy director of Air Force public affairs, when anyone in our Air Force family sees an Above All ad, they should be reminded that their role is important to America. This campaign makes it clear the Air Force's mission Above All is national defense and protecting the American people.

Every day is a new challenge for the Air Force. Airmen play a huge role in our freedom and our ability to respond to any contingency anywhere in the world. As ambassadors in blue, be active in sharing your Air Force story.

We must engage the public in this war of information. Our young people must know that their Air Force is the most technologically advanced, smartest, and capable Air Force that the world has ever known. Our local community leaders must know that Charleston AFB is critically important to the security of this nation. Our enemies must know that when they confront the United States, they are taking on the most dominant air and space force on the planet.

The goal of this campaign is not to be arrogant. The purpose of this campaign is to create a dialogue with America's communities of parents, influencers, and potential recruits about the critical role the Air Force plays in defending America's future.

Get out there and tell our story!
