CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Team Charleston,
I continue to be thoroughly impressed by the extraordinary people helping to win the Global War on Terrorism. Airmen of all ranks dedicated to getting the job done, civilian members of the work force providing continuity and invaluable experience, and family members supporting the service and sacrifices of their loved ones all make Charleston our Air Force's premier base. As I learn more about the wing, I'm truly excited about the quality of life improvements we're working to make this base even better.
I look forward to the day when we can better meet the needs of our force by opening a new Child Development Center. Additionally, we'll soon open the distributed Airmen's Center for our dormitory residents, offering an Internet café, an electronic gaming center, a place to watch movies in a relaxed atmosphere, and a place to enjoy a game of pool and other activities. We're also working to expand the Base Exchange, build a new running track, improve the family campgrounds, expand the chapel, and on several more projects to enhance the base. The men and women working to bring these improvements to reality are dedicated to making Charleston even better and I ask for your patience as we move forward.
Speaking of dedication, 33 Airmen graduated from Airman Leadership School this week, including four who were recognized as award winners. Senior Airman Ryan McCary from the 437th Civil Engineer Squadron and Senior Airman Greg Biondo from the 1st Combat Camera Squadron were named distinguished graduates. Airman Biondo also received the Academic Achievement Award, and Senior Airman Michael Reed from the 437th Maintenance Squadron received the Leadership Award. Finally, Senior Airman Cory Boatwright from the 1 CTCS received the John L. Levitow Award, the most prestigious award our professional military education system bestows upon its graduates. I am extremely proud of all the graduates for dedicating their time and efforts to better develop leadership skills vital to the continued success of our Air Force. I know they'll each have positive impacts for years to come.
I'll close by asking for your assistance to make our professional organizations even better, both here at Charleston and at future assignments. Organizations like the Air Force Sergeants Association, the NCO Association and the Air Force Association all work with our legislatures to ensure our benefits meet the needs of those still serving, those who have retired or those who have been left behind. We have organizations such as the Top Three, First Six and Airmen Against Drunk Driving who also need active participation and support from Team Charleston. Members of these organizations often work behind the scenes and sacrifice time out of their busy schedules to make the base better; they sponsor our PME awards, get us home safely and conduct the ceremonies that honor our military traditions and recognize our Airmen. Although I only highlighted a few, we have a myriad of other organizations for you to choose from. I'd ask you to support one or more that need your leadership and followership. I'm counting on you to make a positive impact.
Finally, please keep your fellow Airmen and their families in your thoughts and prayers as we enjoy the holidays and begin a new year. Be safe, take care of your wingman and enjoy your leisure time -- it's well deserved for all you do day in and day out to take the fight to the enemy.
