What are you going to do with the new year?

By Master Sgt. Thommy McGowan 17th Airlift Squadron first sergeant

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and that the new year finds you well. During this time of year, many people focus on what they can do to improve their lives. What do you have in store for the new year? Have you made a resolution or set new goals for yourself and your family?

Many people focus on improving their health, financial situation and relationships. The first thing you need to do is figure out what it is you want to change or improve. I challenge everyone to focus on something positive and improve their lives for the better. There are many ways to make improvements and Charleston AFB has many agencies that can help you attain your goals for the new year. If you are not sure where to turn for some additional assistance, ask your supervisor and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction or find someone who can.

Once you figure out what it is you want to focus on, the next step is to develop a plan to make that goal a reality. A well developed plan of attack can greatly enhance your chances of success in obtaining your goal. Sometimes it is helpful to write out the steps you feel are needed to be successful.

If you feel you need help reaching these goals, the next step is for you to contact one of the agencies on base that can assist you. Some of the agencies can provide you with the help you need and include the Health and Wellness Center, the Fitness and Sports Center, 437th Medical Group Mental Health Clinic, base chapel and the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

If trimming your waistline and improving your fitness score is a goal of yours for this year, the HAWC and the fitness center can provide you with valuable assistance. They can set you up with a fitness plan to focus on your physical needs.

For others, improving financial situations could be their resolution. The A&FRC can assist you with financial counseling and set you up for success. Make sure you always watch out for the quick fix financial solutions offered in the civilian community. More than likely, they will not provide you with what you really need to reach your financial goals.

If working on your personal relationships is what you want to focus on, the mental health clinic or the chapel can provide you with many resources. Remember, the mental health clinic is here to help you; don't worry about seeking their advice. A chaplain is also a great avenue for you to take and it is the only agency on base that can give you 100 percent confidentiality.

These are just a few of the agencies on base that can help you in the new year. Seek out their advice and assistance to help you with your New Year's resolutions.

Whatever your goals are for the new year, I wish you the very best in accomplishing them. Thank you for all you have done in 2008 and I wish you the very best in 2009!
