Commander's Comments

By Col. John Wood 437th Airlift Wing commander

Another great week at Charleston AFB!

I appreciate the excellence our Airmen display on a daily basis. This week I had the pleasure to meet Capt. Matthew Osgood working the schedule in the 15th Airlift Squadron and he discussed the challenges of last minute TACC drop down missions on a Friday afternoon.

I was impressed with Airman 1st Class Sharnese Walker, a reservist in the 38th Aerial Port Squadron, her attitude while creating ID cards was "I can do more" before her shift ended. I also had a great conversation with George Bradley, a dedicated baseball fan and we compared notes on his previous skills in centerfield.

I enjoyed meeting many of our visitors for our civic leader orientation flight. I followed the outstanding briefing by Charleston's latest Weapons Instructor Course graduate, Capt. Chris Stephens. The civics were definitely excited to see the display of excellence put on by Team Charleston.

That same morning I visited the logistics readiness squadron as a chalk of deployers went through the deployment line. 2nd Lt. Tara Tulip of the logistics readiness squadron and Roy Johnson from the operations group were prepping the deployers.

Later that morning I went to the SIM building and made the mistake of asking Jim Roberts to challenge me. After a few emergency procedures and some max cross wind landings, I definitely felt challenged. I always appreciate the professionalism and expertise our Boeing partners bring to our crew force.

As I was building my own sandwich for lunch at our club, I ran into Senior Master Sgt. (sel) Terry Jones, still excited about his promotion notification. As usual, Donna Basnett, who is everywhere at the club, was there supporting her customers.

The last bit of excellence on my list this week was meeting Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Nicholas Burtch. If you want to see a beautiful yard, just look for the sign in front of their house!
