Commander’s Comments

By Col. John Wood 437th Airlift Wing command

Every week at Charleston AFB brings change. Promotions, assignments, retirements and separations impact every squadron on base.

Chief Ivey and I also see our new arrivals that always feel like "reinforcements." We brief our First Term Airmen and it is a pleasure to see their energy and commitment as they step into our Air Force and get the job done.

They are of course our future, and one will day fill the void left by those who leave Charleston AFB, such as Chief Master Sgt. Reginald Glover who retires Oct. 23. All of you that read this article know it is the "people" part of what we do that matters.

The highlight of my week was watching Team Charleston respond to the F-16 accident that happened off the coast of Charleston. A disabled F-16 landed here safely and was immediately secured by security forces and maintenance. Maj. Chris Callis had notebook in hand to ensure everything was moving correctly.

Our command post, including Capt. Scott Graves, Tech. Sgt. Mike Ellard and Airman 1st Class Matt Rowley, ran multiple checklists, phone patches and coordination efforts.

Our own C-17s and crews helped search for the missing pilot of the second aircraft. Capt. John McClelland came in and led the activation of our Crisis Action Team; all of our Senior Leadership was out making sure we were doing all we could.

Safety was heavily involved, including Capt. Jeff Bartlett and Capt. Sean Gildea. Continuing help was provided by Capt. Christina Liegl from the 315th Airlift Wing Safety Office. Although the second pilot was not safely recovered, I was very proud of the quick action of our team.

Also this week, Chief Ivey and I visited the Fire Department to recognize Raymond West as Air Mobility Command's nominee for the Government Employees Insurance Company Public Service Award in the Fire Prevention and Safety category. Congratulations Mr. West and best of luck at the Air Force level.

I want to end by saying I receive a lot of feedback from the community and from each of you. A perfect example is Tech. Sgt. Brian Saylors; he's making an impact at our gate every day. I remind each of you that you have a lot to be proud of. Continue to be safe and thank you for your excellence.
