JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Honestly I have to grin, and I do it a lot, when I listen to folks talk about many of the facilities on base.
When they mention how great the newly renovated Fitness and Sports Center is, or about the diverse programs at the Outdoor Recreation Center I think to myself, "my force support squadron owns those facilities."
That same thought, along with the same sheepish grin, happens when I hear casual or official discussions about the wonderful hospitality at the Inns of Charleston, the services offered at Joint Base Charleston's award-winning library, or our nationally-accredited Child Development and Youth Programs centers.
Most folks don't realize how large the footprint is of JB CHS's Force Support Squadron and how much the squadron affects the lives of nearly everyone who lives or works on the base.
If you have a sick dog or cat, you can bring it to our first-rate veterinary clinic. If you have a sick car or truck, you can bring that to the Auto Hobby Shop for professional advice, repair or do it yourself.
Visiting aircrew members enjoy boxed lunches from our Flight Kitchen and base Airmen chow-down four times a day at our Gaylor Dining Facility. Civilians and military diners are always welcome at our Charleston Club, Starlifter Lanes Bowling Center and the Globemaster Grill at Wrenwoods Golf Course.
Looking to advance your education? We can help with that too at the Education and Training Center, which offers several on-base colleges and distance-learning options. Along those same lines, the First Term Airmen Center and the Airmen Leadership School are also part of the FSS family.
Every time you go on a temporary duty, receive permanent change of station orders or need a personnel action, that's right - you're going to do business with our Manpower and Personnel Flight. Also, our razor-sharp Base Honor Guard is continually called on to provide "Honor with Dignity" throughout the Eastern Carolinas.
We are definitely a service before self organization, and it really doesn't bother me when someone doesn't connect our squadron name with a facility or activity. I believe the most important aspect is to know we are a first-class organization. We provide the men and women of the world's finest Air Force what they need to carry out the mission of providing globally ready forces and outstanding installation support - we are your Force Support Squadron.
