Natural resources officials plan prescribed fire

628th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Charleston natural resources officials plan to conduct a prescribed fire today, November 7, 2014 in the Weapons Station's Northside Area. This controlled burn is being conducted to minimize the possibility of future wildfires and to facilitate wildlife and timber management objectives laid out in JB Charleston's Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan.

The burn will cover 265 acres and will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue to approximately 7 p.m.   Winds from the northwest should minimize smoke impacts on mission partners and surrounding community.

A prescribed fire is not a wildfire.  It is a managed burn, conducted by trained natural resources professionals. These fires are coordinated with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and with federal and municipal fire departments.

Prescribed fires serve many ends. They reduce natural fuel loads present in the woods, enhance timber and wildlife habitat, restore ecosystems and suppress forest diseases and pests.

Please do not call 911 or the local fire departments to report these fires. Joint Base Charleston personnel can confirm authorized burning activity at (843) 764-7555.

For additional information on prescribed burning call the Joint Base Charleston Natural Resources Office at (843) 794-7951.
