CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
One of the oldest buildings on Charleston Air Force Base just finished receiving a "facelift."
The Starlifter Lanes Bowling Center, named after the C-141 Starlifter and a strong part of Charleston's heritage, now has brick exterior to match the common base décor. The contractor literally wrapped the previously galvanized steel building in a wall of brick.
Along with the new exterior, the bowling center has a new roof, addition to the back door entrance, carpeting throughout, and a new interior ceiling. There is more curb appeal out front with a new entrance to include a handicap-access ramp and even the bathroom renovation brought the restrooms into the 21st century.
Starlifter Lanes opened for business in 1962. It originally housed ten wooden lanes and six lanes in 1969. The Brunswick 3000 synthetic overly system was installed in 1985 to cover the 16 wooden lanes. It wasn't until 1996 that Starlifter Lanes became a 12-lane bowling center. Two years later, the Quibica automatic scoring system was installed as well as the cosmic lights, sound system and bumpers. The current renovations started in October with the snack bar receiving a makeover for a more spacious dining area as well as larger kitchen and customer service area for the employees.
All in all, Starlifter Lanes has a new "out look" bringing with it hopefully, a brighter future.
Come see all the great improvements at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. The fun begins at 9 a.m. Plan to take a guess at the total number of bricks it took to build the new brick exterior - it could mean free bowling for you and a guest until the end of the year.
There are specials throughout the month in order to celebrate the new Starlifter Lanes.
Every Tuesday, buy a block of 50 bingo cards and receive 10 free. As a bowler special, bowl for one dollar a game anytime the lanes are available starting Monday until 5 p.m. through May 11. During the month, take advantage of a 25 percent discount on all bowling balls and bags in the pro shop. There will be free snack bar samples on Wednesday, mini-corndogs on Thursday and wings on May 11. (Free samples previously mentioned are available 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on those specific days.) Also, from Monday until May 11 the Starlifter Lanes will have a snack bar special: southern-style BBQ sandwich for the low price of $2.25.
Don't miss all the excitement - make May the month to visit Starlifter Lanes. The newly-renovated building will "bowl you over."
