Warrior of the Week: Airman 1st Class Cynthia Hicks

By 437th Medical Group Flight Medicine

Airman 1st Class Cynthia Hicks is an aerospace medical apprentice for the 437th Medical Group Flight Medicine and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for one year.

As an aerospace medical apprentice, she performs technical nursing duties involving the care and treatment of patients. She records all vital signs and prepares the patient for their visit with the doctor. She also assists the doctor with minor surgery procedures. She is a basic emergency medical technician and is a qualified emergency responder and vehicle driver.

"I enjoy the challenges of my job and every day is different," said Airman Hicks. "The ability to help and comfort patients during their time of stress is very satisfying. The direct medical support that we provide to our Airmen is critical and enables them to meet their mission. Our Airmen work long hours under some very difficult conditions and it is imperative that we contribute to their better health. A fit Airman is a valuable asset and contributes to our C-17 aircraft flying safe and on time."

This "warrior of the week" hails from Gilroy, Calif., and has been in the Air Force for two years. Her husband, Airman 1st Class Dallas Hicks, is assigned to the 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

"I enlisted in the Air Force for a better job and the opportunity to improve myself," said Airman Hicks. "I was working at my parents' business and I just wanted to do something different. The Air Force recruiter introduced me to the medical field and, although I was somewhat dubious at the time, it was the right decision. The education and possible travel opportunities were enticing factors also for me to enlist. I would like to be a nurse one day and I know it will take great effort on my part, but when I get there, it will be worth it."

"Airman Hicks has an outstanding work ethic," said Tech. Sgt. Monti Cutlip, Jr., NCO in charge of the Public Health Assessment Clinic. She plays a vital role in accomplishing our mission of taking care of our Airmen on flying status."
