CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Airman Phillip Johns is a contracting specialist for the 437th Contacting Squadron and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for six months.
As a contracting specialist, Airman Johns administers and executes contracts for the procurement of supplies, services and construction on base. He is in the process of contracting new mattress pads for the dormitories and administering the base utility contract.
"I enjoy the diversity and challenges of the job and every day is a new day," said Airman Johns. "We purchase everything from laptop computers, software upgrades to night vision goggle equipment. All base supplies and services begin and end with the contracting branch and it is very satisfying when a contract is completed and we have another satisfied customer. Contracting requires a great deal of research and attention to detail and managing a contract to a conclusion is rewarding."
This "Warrior of the Week" hails from Hagerstown, Md., and joined the Air Force in January 2007.
"I was attending Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., and joined the Air Force to continue with my education and get the discipline, structure, and direction I needed in my life. The Air Force education system and the resources available looked like the right place for me."
Airman Johns is currently attending Park University to complete his Community College of the Air Force associate degree in contract management and will continue with his education and pursue a bachelor and masters degree. He is also a volunteer youth soccer coach on base for 11- and 12-year-old children
"Airman Johns has impressed me in the short time he has been assigned to contract management," said Master Sgt. James Ting, 437 CONS Acquisition Flight A NCO in charge. "He has aggressively learned his job and has eagerly tackled all tasks assigned. He is mature well beyond his age and he will be an outstanding NCO one day."
