Warrior of the Week: Staff Sgt. Maryam Baker

1st Combat Camera Squadron

Staff Sgt. Maryam Baker is an information manager for 1st Combat Camera Squadron and has been stationed at Charleston AFB since August 2001.

As an information manager she is required to have a complete working knowledge and understanding of the Defense Travel System. She prepares Airmen for their deployments -- processing passports, establishing their government credit card accounts, and assisting individuals in processing their travel account for payment. She also reviews squadron personnel evaluations for completion and accuracy prior to submission.

"Helping people is what I do and what I like best," said Sergeant Baker. "I thoroughly enjoy working with the 1st Combat Camera team. It is very rewarding to have all their critical paperwork completed accurately and on time. It certainly makes for a smoother deployment for our Airmen."

This Warrior of the Week hails from just outside the gate, Charleston, S.C., and enlisted in the Air Force in April 2001. Her husband, Jeffery, a flying crew chief with 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was already in the Air Force and she was just looking for something to keep her busy. Sergeant Baker's day-time job with 1st Combat Camera, but she said keeping up with her two-year-old daughter, Kaylee, definitely keeps her busy.

Staff Sergeant Baker plans to re-start her education and complete her degree with Community College of the Air Force. She would also like to move up in the enlisted ranks to Chief Master Sergeant before she retires. It is also her dream to open her own business one day when her career in the Air Force is completed.

"Sergeant Baker is a dynamic NCO who always goes above and beyond," said Tech. Sgt. Veronica Giacovelli, NCO in charge of the Commander's Support Staff. She flawlessly performed in the master sergeant role as Combat Camera Squadron CSS NCOIC during the incumbent's ten-month absence. Staff Sergeant Baker eagerly participated in the documentation of Operation Toy Drop. She has mastered photography skills basics, and acquired imagery used in the final product.
