Commanders Action Line

By Public Affairs 437th Airlift Wing

Action Line Message Below:

My husband and I are the temporary campground hosts at the base Fan Campground when the recreation center is closed. We have a question about the x-ray machine area. It says commercial vehicles should go straight. For those of us who have recreational vehicles, we do not consider them commercial.

They are our homes and our cars. Because of this confusion in the signage, several people have been turned around to go back through, which is very difficult. The sign needs to read "and RVs." It also says to go straight ahead, when I go straight ahead, I don't go right into the x-ray area, I go into the guard gate area.

I would really appreciate it if there could be better instructions for those who need to go through the x-ray machine, and how to get there.

Thank you!

Response:

First of all, I would like to thank you for your feedback and concerns. Since the events of Sept 11, 2001, Security Forces have searched all commercial and oversized vehicles prior to allowing entry to the installation.

Oversized vehicles, as indicated by the Security Forces, are any vehicles larger than a seven passenger SUV to include vehicles towing trailers and recreational vehicles. After a closer look at the signage around the Rivers gate search area, we understand how vehicle operators could easily become confused. The current sign states, "Oversized vehicles continue straight," which would lead the average motorist to continue on Arthur Drive to the gate house.

Security Forces have initiated a work order with the base civil engineers to have the sign direct motorists operating commercial or oversized vehicles to turn right into the search area. Safety of all base residents and resources will always be the main concern of Security Forces when determining base entry and search requirements. If there are any more questions or concerns, please contact Senior Master Sgt. Clinton Harris, 437th Security Forces Squadron operations superintendent, at 963-3634.

Thank you.
