CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
The base legal office, with the assistance of more than 40 military, retiree and civilian personnel from Charleston AFB, has started preparations for what looks to be a great tax season.
It is important to note there is a change to the way the Charleston AFB tax program will be run this year. There will no longer be a centralized tax office. Active duty members and their dependents should contact their respective Volunteer Income Tax Assistant representatives to set up a tax preparation appointment.
If your organization is not listed, please contact the 437th Airlift Wing legal office at 963-5502 for further instructions on who to contact to set up an appointment. Even though there is no longer a tax center, there are some added benefits to retirees through a drop-off service at the base legal office.
Regardless of which tax category you are in, the documents required to take advantage of the free tax preparation service are the same. Please bring the following documents with you: Active-duty identification cards or social security cards for yourself and all of your dependents, all W2 tax preparation forms and all other tax documents.
As in the past, the VITA representatives are trained and certified to prepare the following types of returns and forms:
- Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ forms with the following 1040 Schedules--A, B, C-ez, D, EIC, R and SE
- Form 2441 - Child and Dependent Care Credit (IRS Delay to Feb. 11 2008 to file)*
- Form 8812 - Additional Child Tax Credit (IRS Delay to Feb. 11 2008 to file)*
- Form 8863 - Education Credits (IRS Delay to Feb. 11 2008 to file)*
- Form 8880 - Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions
If you have any questions regarding this free tax preparation service, contact your unit representative. Other questions may be referred to the CAFB Law Center at 963-5502.
