CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Staff Sgt. Edgard Bonillas is a member of the 437th Contracting Squadron and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for almost three years.
He recently returned from a six-month deployment to Bagram AB, Afghanistan, where he served with the Joint Contracting Command as a contingency contract officer.
"My job was to award all construction contracts for the base I was at and its surrounding areas," Sergeant Bonillas said.
Now that Sergeant Bonillas is back at Charleston AFB his job is to help each unit on base acquire the necessary items they need to perform their daily mission. He has purchased items such as vehicle paint, uniforms for deploying Airmen and navigational maps for Charleston aircraft.
"Sergeant Bonillas is a go-getter, dependable and is always willing to offer his assistance to his fellow Airmen without being tasked to do so," said Jacqueline Brown, 437 CONS contracting officer, team 2 leader.
Sergeant Bonillas is also responsible for keeping the contracting squadron ready to deploy at a moment's notice by acting as one of the unit's deployment managers.
"I make sure the squadron is current on all of their training," said Sergeant Bonillas. "If they are not, then it's my job to schedule the training."
This "warrior of the week" hails from Imperial, Calif., and enlisted in the Air Force nearly 10 years ago as a way to travel and see the world.
Come October, Sergeant Bonillas will have served in the Air Force for 10 years and his enlistment will be up in October.
"I plan to extend my enlistment till the end of December so I have plenty of time to help the squadron with the end of the fiscal year," he said. "That is the busiest time of year for the squadron."
Sergeant Bonillas is keeping his options open after his separation from the Air Force.
"I am looking into joining the Guard or Reserve," Sergeant Bonillas said. "I am also very interested in working for the U.S. Border Patrol."
