CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
The "Book and Brain" training workshop is coming to Charleston AFB Oct. 2 to 4 to teach parents how to help students divide and conquer reading comprehension questions and reading tasks in science, social studies, math, language arts and other classes.
With the children back in school and summer coming to a close, parents are spending evenings helping their children with homework and studying for quizzes and tests. The "Book and Brain" method for test taking makes this process easier for parents and increases test scores for their children.
Students will learn how to look in the text for concrete answers using book review questions. Students will also learn to stop and think with abstract ideas gleaned from the text using brain questions.
"If you want to give your child a real edge in reading comprehension and testing, come to 'Book and Brain' to learn how to help your child become a better reader and test-taker," said Nancy Linden, author and trainer of "Book and Brain."
Ms. Linden has worked extensively with schools in Texas and throughout the country and was recently a presenter at the Military Child Education Coalition 10th annual conference.
Throughout the past 15 years, approximately 750 campuses in more than 185 Texas school districts have reported 10 to 20 percent gains in standardized reading scores after staff and students attended the training, Ms. Linden said.
Charleston AFB is the first Air Force installation to make this program available to parents.
The techniques learned at the training sessions can be applied when taking teacher-made tests, state standardized tests and college admission tests such as the SAT and ACT.
The practical, hands-on training will give parents all the tools they need to work with their child. The program is for parents and students in grades three through 12. Children must be proficient readers.
The training will be divided into three sessions. On Oct. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m., all parents must attend to learn program basics. On the following evening, Oct. 3 parents and students in grades six through 12 attend from 6 to 8 p.m. The next morning, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon, parents and students in grades three through five should attend. Parents may choose to attend all three sessions if they have children in both grade groups and should register for all sessions they plan to attend.
To register, call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 963-4406. Space is limited. All sessions will be held at the A&FRC, Building 500. Limited on-site childcare is available for school-age children ages 5 and up. For more information about "Book and Brain,' go to www.bookandbrain.com.
