CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Airman 1st Class Carey Grant is a member of the 437th Civil Engineer Squadron and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for more than 10 months.
He is currently deployed to Southwest Asia in the 379th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron as an electrical systems apprentice. He also holds the same position at home station where his responsibilities include maintaining high-and low-voltage systems, alarms and airfield lighting. Airman Grant contributes to Team Charleston's mobility mission by help keeping the power running.
"It seems small, but if a pilot can't read his flight plans because the lights are out, he can't get supplies or bombs down range," he said. "The best part about my job is that it's something new every day. One day I could be high in the bucket truck changing out ballasts for streetlights, and the next day I could be installing outlets for top secret facilities."
This "warrior of the week" hails from Augusta, Ga., and enlisted in the Air Force almost two years ago so he could serve his county, take advantage of the educational benefits and to learn a trade and make himself a better person, he said.
Because of his ties to Georgia, it helped him get noticed by a commander.
During his first month in his deployed located, Airman Grant's crew had a job that was in a colonel's office. The colonel asked the crew if anyone was from Georgia and Airman Grant said he was, so the commander presented him a coin.
Airman Grant's future goals are to continue his upgrade training, learn his job and work towards his Community College of the Air Force Associate's Degree.
"Airman Grant is an outstanding Airman with an excellent work ethic," Staff Sgt. Scott Thomson, 379 ECES electrical systems journeyman. "You can always count on him to get the job done right the first time. His daily performance is a great asset to the civil engineer squadron as well as the Air Force. He has a bright future ahead of him with his hard work, dedication and his professionalism."
