CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Charleston AFB recently closed out fiscal year 2008 with several quality of life and quality of standard improvements.
Some items Maj. Michael Connor, 437th Comptroller Squadron commander, highlighted from fiscal year 2008 included $23.6 million across all fund types, $1.1 million for the 437th Communications Squadron information technology refresh and $1.2 million for cable upgrades.
The base originally received $38.2 million for FY08, but received $18.5 million additional dollars in the August-September timeframe from the Air Mobility Command and Air Force levels.
More than $12 million of the funding went toward operating and maintenance facility improvement projects. These projects consisted of repairing overhead utility, repairing a flightline gate, repairing fire alarm systems and several other projects. Some quality of life projects that were funded included the dorm pavilion and gazebos, repairing the base chapel and constructing a 400 meter athletic track.
Also, more than $896,000 went toward replacing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems on the base. Military family housing also used more than $1 million to replace HVAC systems in base housing and in Hunley Park.
"The bottom line is that everything we funded at fiscal year-end is going to benefit everyone," said Capt. Wesley Morris, 437 CPTS deputy comptroller. "Whether you're going to use the 400 meter running track, work inside an air-conditioned building, live in the dorms or use the chapel, these improvements really affect everyone because they were spread throughout the squadrons and all across the base."
