Former MSG chief remembered

By Staff Sgt. Jennifer Arredondo

The former superintendent for the 437th Mission Support Group passed away Jan. 8 while temporarily deployed to Offutt AFB, Neb.

Chief Master Sgt. Denise Mikolajczyk was assigned to Charleston AFB from April 2007 to September 2008 until she was assigned to Headquarters Air Combat Command A1 Personnel at Langley AFB, Va.

While the passing of Chief Mikolajczyk, better known as Chief Mik by some, was sudden, her dedication to the Air Force and the Airmen that fills its ranks is what will be remembered.

"We all have fond memories of Chief Mik," said Col. Frank Jones, 437 MSG commander. "What I will remember most [about her] is that every day, she came to work with a positive attitude, with an excitement about what the day would bring, with an eagerness to make a difference.

"And that's the legacy that Chief Mikolajczyk leaves with us. Each of us carries within ourselves the memories of Chief Mik -- a place within our hearts, a commitment that we, too, will strive to make a difference in people's lives, every single day."

During her 26-year career, Chief Mikolajczyk was stationed all over the U.S. and at overseas bases. She started out her Air Force career as a pneudraulic specialist. Later in her career, she cross-trained into manpower. It was in this career field that she would rise to the top of the enlisted ranks of the Air Force.

Because she excelled in her Air Force career, she was also able to inspire those around her.

"Chief Mik had a way of lighting up a room when she entered," said Chief Master Sgt. Tonia Savidge, 437 MSG superintendent. "Her positivity and can-do spirit was responsible for motivating everyone she met. Denise had a genuine warmth about her that let you know she was a sincere friend. As a leader, she balanced strength with kindness in a way that made a positive difference in the lives of many."
