Construction update

437th Civil Engineer Squadron

Construction of a new Child Development Center for Charleston AFB is scheduled to begin with a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. Feb. 13.

The new facility will replace the existing 38-year-old Child Development Center and will accommodate more than 300 children, more than two-and-a-half times the current center's capacity.

"The new Child Development Center will be located in an open grassed site behind the Fitness and Sports Center, a site which provides a safe, convenient location with reduced vehicular traffic," said Todd Martin, 437th Civil Engineer Squadron base programs manager. "Moving the facility from its current location will also help further reduce traffic congestion on Hill Boulevard. When the project is completed in 2010, the new state-of-the-art Child Development Center will further enhance the first-class, quality child care and education provided at Charleston AFB."
