Is your yard ready?

By Tony Draughn 437th Civil Engineering Squadron housing facility chief

Spring is just around the corner. The days are getting warmer and before we know it, the grass will be turning green. It's time to dust off the lawn mower, weed eater and pruning shears. The weeds in the yard need to be pulled, shrubbery pruned and flower beds cleaned to make room for the beautiful flowers and green grass spring and summer will bring.

Currently the self help center has pine straw available for pick up and is scheduled to have flowers, weed block, grass seed and fertilizer available in early April to help spruce up the appearance of the yard and add to the outstanding appearance of the housing area. The self help center is located in building 625 and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The standards for maintaining the lawn can be found in the Charleston Air Force Base Pamphlet 32-301, Para 2.11.10. Copies can be obtained through the housing office.

Self help projects are also popular this time of year, so don't forget it's necessary to obtain prior approval by submitting Air Force Form 332, Base Civil Engineer Work Request before installing items such as fences, sheds and satellite dishes. The Air Force Form 332 is available online at http://www.e-publishing.af.mil/?txtSearchWord=332&rdoFormPub=rdoForm.

In April we start the home of the week competition and select the home of the month for May from the April winners. The friendly competition between neighbors encourages housing residents to take pride in their yard, so take advantage of the next few weeks to get the yard ready. Weekly inspections will continue to be Wednesday mornings. Keep in mind if the lawn is mowed, edged and trimmed during the weekend it will still be in good shape for Wednesday's inspection.

The home of the week winners will receive a certificate and two housing coffee cups while the home of the month winner will receive a certificate signed by Col. Frank Jones, Mission Support Group commander, a $50 savings bond from Heritage Trust Bank and a rosewood stained and piano-finished wooden desk clock with an engraved placard displaying the name, address and month in which the award was won.

As a reminder, the new refuse pickup days are Mondays for Charleston AFB housing and Fridays for Hunley Park. The next scheduled bulk pick up is April 8 and will be scheduled once a month on the second Wednesday of the month through the end of September. Only garbage items in the 90 gallon trash container provided by the housing office will be collected. If making a permanent change of station this summer, plan well ahead as to not get caught short. Yard waste such as leaves and branches will be collected every Wednesday base-wide and recycling items will continue to be collected by Charleston County every other week.

For any questions concerning the standard of the home of the week or home of the month program, don't hesitate to call the housing office at 963-3868.
