Wake up to new reveille guidlines

By Master Sgt. Christopher Greek 437th Communications Squadron first sergeant

Reveille and retreat are steeped in tradition and are a proud part of our American military heritage. To honor the colors and the brave men and women who have fought for our freedom, we will begin playing "To the Colors" during reveille on Charleston AFB April 15. We will continue playing the national anthem during retreat. To ensure we are all observing the proper customs and courtesies, here are some guidelines everyone should know:

Reveille and "To the Colors" will be played at 7 a.m. Military members outside in uniform will come to parade rest when reveille is played. On the first note of "To the Colors," come to attention, face the flag or music and salute.

Military members in civilian clothes will come to parade rest when reveille is played and on the first note of "To the Colors," come to attention and either render a hand salute or place their right hand over their heart.

Military members conducting physical training on- or off- duty in either the official physical training gear or civilian attire must adhere to the reveille guidelines for military members in civilian clothes. Members have the option of either saluting or placing their right hand over their heart.

Civilians should stand at attention and place their hand over their heart when "To the Colors" is played.

Retired or former military members in civilian clothing are also authorized to render the hand salute.

If operating a vehicle on the installation when reveille and "To the Colors" is played, stop your vehicle and sit quietly until the music ends.

Retreat procedures will not change and are exactly like reveille. However, the National Anthem is played instead of "To the Colors."

If you have any questions regarding these policies you can refer to Air Force Instruction 34-1201, Air Force Pamphlet 34-1202 or contact your first sergeant.
