Charleston Airmen tried during court martial

Two members of Charleston AFB were tried at a special court-martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice in April.

The maximum punishment at a special courts-martial consists of a bad-conduct discharge, 12 months confinement, forfeiture of two-thirds pay per month for 12 months, and a reduction in rank to airman basic.

During the first special court-martial, an airman first class from the 437th Logistics Readiness Squadron was found guilty by a military judge alone of the following offenses: dereliction of duty, in violation of Article 92, UCMJ, after wrongfully using his government travel card for non-official purposes in the amount of $2,720.78. The Airman also committed larceny by stealing two Airmen's credit cards and wrongfully charged a total of $1,463.03 between the two of them, which is in violation of Article 120, UCMJ. The Airman stole services from Cactus Car Wash by using the stolen credit card to obtain a car wash valued at $27.90, in violation of Article 134, UCMJ. Finally, the Airman attempted to wrongfully obtain a car stereo installation from Norton's Car Stereo by using a stolen credit card to purchase the service, in violation of Article 80, UCMJ.

For these crimes, the Airman was sentenced by the military judge to a bad conduct discharge, six months confinement, forfeiture of $933 pay per month for six months and a reduction in rank to airman basic.

At the second special court-martial, a senior airman with the 315th Airlift Wing, who was activated to the 437th Security Forces Squadron, was found guilty by military judge alone of the following offenses: three specifications of larceny for falsifying accrual vouchers by putting an address outside the local area in order to obtain per diem and lodging expenses. In total, the Airman stole $7,930.44 from the United States Air Force in violation of Article 121, UCMJ.

The Airman was sentenced by a panel of officer members to pay a fine of $12,540 and if the fine is not paid, the Airman will serve 12 months in confinement, three months of hard labor without confinement and receive a reduction in rank to airman.
