CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Construction of a new six-lane, asphalt-paved, 400-meter running track began in March in a former housing area along Frick Avenue. The location was chosen for its proximity to the Fitness and Sports Center and because the layout of the existing, unused roadways in the area formed an oval that was nearly identical to the shape of a standard 400-meter track. By constructing the new track over the old roadbeds, the project was able to cut the cost and time to prepare the site, while preserving the site's many large oak trees.
The track is scheduled to open in August and will provide Charleston AFB with a safe, convenient place to run and exercise. The track will also serve as the standard test location for the Air Force fitness test's 1.5 mile run, providing Airmen with the ability to train where they will be tested.
Future plans for the track are already in development and include adding synthetic track surfacing, restrooms, a drinking fountain and site lighting.
