Base welcomes new 14 AS commander

By Airman Ian Hoachlander 437th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 14th Airlift Squadron welcomed a new commander during a change of command ceremony May 21 in Nose Dock 2.

Lt. Col. Randall "Randy" Huiss, a recent graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, Fort Dix, N.J., with a master's degree in air mobility, replaced Lt. Col. Norman "Buddy" Czubaj as commander.

Colonel Czubaj will assume the duties of Air Force Military Assistant to the Executive Secretary for the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Colonel Huiss is from Athens, Ohio. He graduated from the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., with a Bachelor of Science degree in management and was commissioned into the Air Force in 1993.

What jobs did you perform before you became commander?
Director of operations for the 16th Airlift Squadron.

What are your initial plans as the new commander?
I want to learn about the people as quickly as possible since they are the key to the squadron's success.

What is the goal and mission of your agency?
Ultimately, it is to provide the warfighter with the right equipment when and where needed, anywhere in the world.

What are your expectations of your Airmen?
I expect them to know their job, do their job, do it safely and always be professional.

What was your most memorable assignment and why?
Considering I've been stationed here three times, it has to be here at Charleston. I have gotten to see the base change so drastically from about six C-17s when I first arrived here in 1995 to how it is today.

What is an interesting fact about you?
I was lucky enough to fly on Operation Keiko Lift, which consisted of flying "Free Willy" to Iceland.

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is "Gone in 60 Seconds."

What is one of your biggest pet peeves?
I hate it when people are late.

What is your favorite quote?
"You get what you get and you don't throw a fit." - Mia Huiss, 3.

Who is your role model and why?
My dad is my role model. He turns 73 this year and has worked ever since he was 18. He has had a couple medical setbacks, but was able to fight back. I have never met a harder working, honest or loyal person.
