SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. –
Airmen at Air Mobility Command wings and affiliate units will have the opportunity to showcase their singing talents this summer during AMC Icon, an annual command-wide contest to crown the best Air Force vocalist in AMC.
"We're excited to once again offer mobility Airmen the opportunity to showcase their vocal talent," said Sam Parker, chief of AMC Services Resources and Requirements and the command AMC Icon project manager.
Mr. Parker said AMC Icon is a solo vocal performance, karaoke-style competition based loosely on the format of the television show, "American Idol." Throughout July and August, AMC installations and affiliate units will conduct base-level AMC Icon contests. Base-level contests are open to all authorized Services patrons 18 years of age and older.
According to Mr. Parker, AMC guard, Reserve, en route and tenant units are also eligible to compete.
He explained eligible participants who are not located on or near an AMC installation may participate in a special music video category created for this year's contest. Video submissions will be judged separately with up to $1,000 in cash prizes awarded based on program participation.
The top Air Force performer from each AMC base-level show, as well as the top AMC affiliate unit music video category contestant, will represent their installation during the command finals Oct. 22 at Scott AFB.
Contestants will be judged on overall singing ability as they perform pre-selected songs. Judging criteria includes elements of vocal quality, style and showmanship.
"With each base guaranteed $1,000 in cash prizes and $2,000 in cash prizes available at the command level contest, we're hoping to bring out the best of the best in AMC," said Mr. Parker.
Top command-level finishers will also receive a special interview with the Air Force's premier talent troupe, Tops in Blue. In fact, Airman 1st Class Jeff Collins from Dover AFB, Del., one of last year's AMC Icon finalists, is now touring with Tops in Blue.
