Construction Update

437th Civil Engineer Squadron

Charleston AFB recently received economic stimulus funds to upgrade the heating and cooling systems of various facilities on base to more energy efficient systems. Facilities receiving the funding include Building 330, Building 325, Building 108 and Family Housing.

Building 330 Base Billeting

This month marked the beginning of a project upgrading the out-dated heating and cooling systems of the first and second floor guest rooms and lobby areas. The project will include completely update the heating and cooling systems in 18 guest rooms and two lobby areas with the latest state-of-the-art variable refrigerant volume heating and air systems with individual controls for each guest room area. Once complete, facility occupants will enjoy a more comfortable environment that is easily adjusted from each individual guest room.

Building 325 Combined Club

This project will include converting the entire heating and cooling systems to provide fully functional direct digital control of the facility systems. The control systems for the air handler units and new variable speed pump inverters for the chilled and hot water systems serving the facility HVAC system will also be upgraded. Once complete, the facility will have an efficient system creating a more comfortable environment for club users.

Building 108 Simulator Training Facility

This project will include converting the entire heating and cooling systems to provide fully functional direct digital control of the facility systems. Several cooling system units will be changed out with efficient cooling units in areas of simulator equipment controls. The work will also include modifications to the chill water system piping and several cooling system evaporators. Once complete, the facility will have a efficient system creating greater cooling coverage for critical aircraft simulator equipment controls.

Military Family Housing Area

This project is currently underway to replace 18 water source heating and cooling systems in the military family housing area on base and in Hunley Park. Project work includes replacing geothermal well heating and cooling systems with energy efficient conventional type heat pump systems. The geothermal wells will be abandoned and capped under the requirements of another project this year. Work is being closely coordinated with the base housing office and
is expected to be completed in October.
