CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Leadership is a word you hear often in our Air Force. Harry Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, is one leader that comes to mind when you think of leading through challenging times. As you know, President Truman was at our nation's helm and led us through the end of World War II. I was recently reminded of one of his famous quotes regarding leadership: "It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."
When I see people putting others before themselves, I see selfless leadership at its finest. Whether it is taking extra time to quality check your Airman's performance report or helping a retiree find the passenger terminal, you lead by helping others. Leadership is not just displayed in the words you write or say, it is also showcased by your physical actions, your appearance and your conduct. Helping another Airman pick up a tipped-over box of supplies or rising to greet your flight leadership are examples of physical actions that people notice about you and how you conduct yourself. For all of us, when we show respect for another Airman's time and efforts, you are leading by example.
This week I visited the maintenance group. I was able to witness several examples of Airmen leading Airmen selflessly. Staff Sgt. Jake Darracott works as a unit deployment manager, constantly reacting to deployment taskings and making sure his fellow Airmen have the right equipment for their deployment. I met with Master Sgt. Jason Ellis and his maintenance special operators. His team has a huge mission responsibility, and they are constantly succeeding with quiet recognition. I couldn't help but be impressed with Master Sgt. Dan Small and all the Airmen and civilians who are focused on precision and efficiency. I also heard Norman Moore speak at Chief Master Sgt. Richard Eugley's retirement ... if you haven't heard Mr. Moore's passion for what we do, stop by and visit him and you will leave energized!
Chief Ivey and I had the pleasure of meeting with South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford this week. Our story to him was simple: our Airmen and civilians are great citizens and exceptional leaders. The governor listened to all the different commanders from each state military installation, and the first thing he said was he needed to get to Charleston to see you!
Chief Ivey and I also met Jen Shearer, spouse of Staff Sgt. Robert Shearer, and Angela Denis, spouse of Senior Airman David Denis. I was pleased to hear they enjoy their homes and neighborhood in Hunley Park. They also made it clear we are speeding too much in base housing. We all need to pay closer attention, and I've asked security forces to ensure we are.
This weekend, take a moment to think about the differences you make in the lives of others, and the selfless examples that you've seen others do when they don't care who receives the credit. I'd also like to welcome the parents of Airman 1st Class Edrikus Brown, traveling from Alabama to see the great work their son does protecting our base. I thank each of you for your service and have a safe summer weekend!
