CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. –
Maj. Teofilo Henriquez is a member of the 437th Medical Group and has been stationed at Charleston AFB for about four years.
He is currently deployed to Colombia, South America, as a U.S. Army Mission Medical Liaison officer for the U.S. Army Mission in Bogota, Colombia. Major Henriquez's responsibilities include advising Colombian medical leadership on ways to better their medical system. He is also responsible for an annual budget of about $2.5 million. Lastly, he is responsible for assisting and coordinating all of the purchases of U.S. donated medical equipment and medical training course, which is an integral part of helping Colombia win their conflict with the armed guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia.
While at Charleston, Major Henriquez is the medical information systems flight commander. Here, his responsibilities are to ensure access to electronic medical documentation to the providers and all authorized medical personnel at the 437th Medical Group.
According to Major Henriquez, what he likes best about his job is the variety of work he can be assigned to.
"One minute you're running an information system department in a U.S. medical facility and the next minute you can be off to a foreign land to be a liaison officer," he said.
This "warrior of the week" was born in the Dominican Republic, raised in New York City and then moved after college to Miami. Major Henriquez joined the Air Force because he knew he had so much to offer the world, but just needed someone to show him how.
Major Henriquez's future goal is to go through another permanent change of station and let the adventure begin all over again.
"Charleston is a great assignment," Major Henriquez said. "It has a great community, great people to work with and my favorite ... great food."
